How to Make Your Workout Quick and Sweaty
clipped from health.usnews.com While researching a book on exercise and the brain, John Ratey learned that intense exercise releases a hormone that burns belly fat and adds muscle fibers. So the Harvard Medical School psychiatrist swapped out 40-minute jogging sessions on the treadmill for something less time consuming but more vigorous: Twice a week, he now jogs for a total of 20 minutes and includes five exhausting sprints of 20 to 30 seconds apiece. After a month, he was amazed at the results. "I didn't change my diet, and I spent less time on the treadmill," he says. "But all of a sudden, I was 10 pounds lighter." Many of the people I work with are time starved," says Todd Durkin, a trainer and conditioning coach in San Diego. "They don't have an hour a day to work out." |

McCain proposes $300M prize for new auto battery
I have an idea. How about we give $300 million to Warren Buffet or Bruce Covner and get them working on solving the Social Security problem. They will probably be early investors in the new battery anyway and the returns will be better.
clipped from apnews.myway.com Republican presidential candidate John McCain said Monday that the search for alternatives to the country's dependence on foreign oil is so urgent that he's willing to throw money at it.

Comfy New Commuter Bikes for Getting Around Town
File this under food for thought.
clipped from health.usnews.com If $4-a-gallon gas has you looking for relief, consider: A concerted effort is underway to attract casual bike riders into the fold. The lure is a range of new commuting bikes that promise to make everyday travel by bicycle as comfortable and fashionable as it is cheap. Meantime, a bill that will allow employers to offer financial incentives to bicycle commuters is winding its way through the House and Senate. The Trek Lime, for example, one of a series of coasting bikes designed for especially easy riding, has an automatic shifting system powered by a generator on the front hub, as well as old-fashioned pedal brakes designed to make the riding experience carefree. It runs slightly under $600. The Breezer Villager, which features a light aluminum frame and a seven-speed shifting system, was recently named best commuting bike of 2008 by Bicycling Magazine. Beginners and older riders might like Electra Bicycle Co.'s Townie |

Economists React: Concerns About Inflation Expectations
Seems more and more like 1978.
clipped from blogs.wsj.com Not surprisingly, the major driver of the sharp jump in the headline was a 5.7% spike in gasoline prices. Also, utility rates jumped 2.3%. Looking ahead, it appears that gasoline will show an even sharper advance in June – somewhere in the neighborhood of +9% based on current quotes –David Greenlaw, Morgan Stanley The primary question left outstanding, is when will those headline increases begin to visibly show up in the core. Right now, what has mitigated a much sharper rise in core prices, which by the way at 2.3% on an annualized basis is well above the implied target range at the Fed –Joseph Brusuelas, Merk Investments I doubt that the headlines covering these data in tomorrow’s local newspaper will convince the general public that they should be marking down their inflation expectations. –Stephen Stanley, RBS Greenwich Capital The main takeaway from this report is the troublingly high level of headline inflation. –Zavh Pandl, Lehman Brothers |

Parallels Server for Mac, a $999 product which has been in test mode, will be available in final form. The product will let companies that buy Apple’s software server product, called Mac OS X Server, continue to run Windows and Linux applications, like databases, e-mail servers and other programs. In a phone interview, Serguei Beloussov, CEO of Parallels, tells the Business Technology Blog that the product will remove one further obstacle to Mac adoption within big businesses. “It makes it a no brainer,” Beloussov says.

‘Potty Whisperer’ toilet-trains toddlers in one day
I wonder if I can get a franchise?
clipped from www.msnbc.msn.com An operator of a so-called “Booty Camp” in suburban Chicago has a claim that will astonish parents of droopy-diapered toddlers everywhere. Give her five hours, she says, and she’ll give you a potty-trained toddler. Impossible? Not according to TODAY’s Al Roker, who offered an unsolicited testimonial. “I actually took my son to this, and it works,” he said. “One day.” Sweeney, a registered nurse and the mother of six, told TODAY’s Ann Curry that her system actually works about 98 percent of the time. Based on Nathan H. Azrin’s book “Toilet Training in Less Than a Day,” the woman who is called the “Potty Whisperer” trains parents as much as she teaches the toddlers.
