How to Make Your Workout Quick and Sweaty

Let me know the results if you try this workout routine.
clipped from health.usnews.com
While researching a book on exercise and the brain, John Ratey learned that intense exercise releases a hormone that burns belly fat and adds muscle fibers. So the Harvard Medical School psychiatrist swapped out 40-minute jogging sessions on the treadmill for something less time consuming but more vigorous: Twice a week, he now jogs for a total of 20 minutes and includes five exhausting sprints of 20 to 30 seconds apiece. After a month, he was amazed at the results. "I didn't change my diet, and I spent less time on the treadmill," he says. "But all of a sudden, I was 10 pounds lighter."
Many of the people I work with are time starved," says Todd Durkin, a trainer and conditioning coach in San Diego. "They don't have an hour a day to work out."

McCain proposes $300M prize for new auto battery

Note to John McCain. If someone can come up with a better automobile battery they won't need a $300 million prize.

I have an idea. How about we give $300 million to Warren Buffet or Bruce Covner and get them working on solving the Social Security problem. They will probably be early investors in the new battery anyway and the returns will be better.

Republican presidential candidate John McCain said Monday that the search for alternatives to the country's dependence on foreign oil is so urgent that he's willing to throw money at it.

The Arizona senator proposed a $300 million prize for whoever can develop a better automobile battery, and $5,000 tax credits for consumers who buy new zero-emission vehicles. The latest proposal is in addition to his support for overturning the federal ban on offshore oil drilling.

Comfy New Commuter Bikes for Getting Around Town

When I read this article I had four immediate thoughts. How do we make money from this trend? Twenty years from now are we going to look like China looked about 20 years ago? How is this going to effect oil prices? And, I wonder how many pounds American's are going to lose in the next ten years?

File this under food for thought.

If $4-a-gallon gas has you looking for relief, consider: A concerted effort is underway to attract casual bike riders into the fold. The lure is a range of new commuting bikes that promise to make everyday travel by bicycle as comfortable and fashionable as it is cheap.
Meantime, a bill that will allow employers to offer financial incentives to bicycle commuters is winding its way through the House and Senate.

The Trek Lime, for example, one of a series of coasting bikes designed for especially easy riding, has an automatic shifting system powered by a generator on the front hub, as well as old-fashioned pedal brakes designed to make the riding experience carefree. It runs slightly under $600.
The Breezer Villager, which features a light aluminum frame and a seven-speed shifting system, was recently named best commuting bike of 2008 by Bicycling Magazine.

The Google Earth gatecrashers who take uninvited dips in home-owners' swimming pools

I wonder if we will be importing this new behavior like we do reality shows.

My guess is Yes. And your guess?

Would-be revellers are using satellite images on the internet to find houses with swimming pools - and then turning up uninvited for an impromptu dip.

The craze involves using the Google Earth programme, which provides high-quality aerial photos of Britain and other countries.

Once a target is chosen, the organisers use social networking sites such as Facebook and Bebo to arrange to meet, say police.

Officers said that residents have woken up to find youngsters 'dipping' in their back gardens, or have come home from work to a swimming pool full of beer cans.

One group has already boasted on the internet that it held an event earlier this week.

A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said yesterday: 'We are advising owners of swimming pools to be on their guard.

The rules of 'dipping' often include wearing fancy dress and participants are urged to 'bring a bike' to escape if discovered.

A potential target? A pool in the back garden of a house in Dorset as seen on Google earth

Economists React: Concerns About Inflation Expectations

You can read the more detailed comments and analysis by following the link in the clip.

Seems more and more like 1978.
clipped from blogs.wsj.com
Not surprisingly, the major driver of the sharp jump in the headline was a 5.7% spike in gasoline prices. Also, utility rates jumped 2.3%. Looking ahead, it appears that gasoline will show an even sharper advance in June – somewhere in the neighborhood of +9% based on current quotes
–David Greenlaw, Morgan Stanley
The primary question left outstanding, is when will those headline increases begin to visibly show up in the core. Right now, what has mitigated a much sharper rise in core prices, which by the way at 2.3% on an annualized basis is well above the implied target range at the Fed
–Joseph Brusuelas, Merk Investments
I doubt that the headlines covering these data in tomorrow’s local newspaper will convince the general public that they should be marking down their inflation expectations.
–Stephen Stanley, RBS Greenwich Capital
The main takeaway from this report is the troublingly high level of headline inflation.

Macs Are In Business, Virtually

Next Tuesday a new product from Parallels will go on sale that could make it more appealing for businesses to switch to Mac servers , the back-office hardware and software that let tech managers share files, printers and manage computers connected to local area networks.

Investors take note.
clipped from blogs.wsj.com

One thing that has helped Apple make modest inroads into the business market in recent years has been a handy new breed of “virtualization” software that lets Macintosh users operate Windows applications at the same time they’re running Mac software. So far, virtualization software has made it easier for users of desktop software to switch to Macs.

Parallels Server for Mac, a $999 product which has been in test mode, will be available in final form. The product will let companies that buy Apple’s software server product, called Mac OS X Server, continue to run Windows and Linux applications, like databases, e-mail servers and other programs.
In a phone interview, Serguei Beloussov, CEO of Parallels, tells the Business Technology Blog that the product will remove one further obstacle to Mac adoption within big businesses. “It makes it a no brainer,” Beloussov says.

Vibrating your bod may do muscles, bones good

Writing in the journal Current Sports Medicine Reports, researchers detail the evidence for and against so-called whole body vibration training. WBV involves standing on a platform that sends mild vibratory impulses through the feet and into the rest of the body
clipped from www.msnbc.msn.com

Older, sedentary people may benefit from a daily shaking

Standing on a vibrating platform may sound like an odd way to pass the time, but a new research review suggests it may do the muscles and bones some good — particularly in older or sedentary adults.

These vibrations activate muscle fibers more efficiently, it is claimed, than conscious contraction of muscles during regular exercise. WBV is often touted as a way to improve muscle power, jump higher or sprint faster.

Iraqis Condemn American Demands

High-level negotiations over the future role of the U.S. military in Iraq have turned into an increasingly acrimonious public debate, with Iraqi politicians denouncing what they say are U.S. demands to maintain nearly 60 bases in their country indefinitely.

Top Iraqi officials are calling for a radical reduction of the U.S. military's role here after the U.N.

"The Americans are making demands that would lead to the colonization of Iraq," said Sami al-Askari, a senior Shiite politician on parliament's foreign relations committee who is close to Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. "If we can't reach a fair agreement, many people think we should say, 'Goodbye, U.S. troops. We don't need you here anymore.' "

‘Potty Whisperer’ toilet-trains toddlers in one day

clipped from www.msnbc.msn.com
An operator of a so-called “Booty Camp” in suburban Chicago has a claim that will astonish parents of droopy-diapered toddlers everywhere. Give her five hours, she says, and she’ll give you a potty-trained toddler.
Impossible? Not according to TODAY’s Al Roker, who offered an unsolicited testimonial. “I actually took my son to this, and it works,” he said. “One day.”
Sweeney, a registered nurse and the mother of six, told TODAY’s Ann Curry that her system actually works about 98 percent of the time. Based on Nathan H. Azrin’s book “Toilet Training in Less Than a Day,” the woman who is called the “Potty Whisperer” trains parents as much as she teaches the toddlers.
